Highly sensitive identification of proteins

The protein identification service of Protagen is highly standardized and covers all process steps with highest sensitivity, quality and short turnaround times:

  • Production of the gel (optional)
  • Spot picking
  • Tryptic in-gel digestion with peptide extraction
  • Mass spectrometric analysis
  • Bioinformatic analysis for protein identification by multiple algorithms
  • Detailed reporting

For the mass spectrometric analysis you can choose between two options:

A) Protein identification via MALDI-MS/MS

MALDI-MS has become the standard method for the identification of proteins from gel bands or 2D gel spots. In comparison to Edman sequencing, MALDI-MS/MS is faster, more sensitive and more cost-effective.

The service for highly sensitive identification and characterization of proteins via MALDI-MS includes:

  • Peptide Mass Fingerprint (PMF via MS)
  • Peptide Fragmentation Fingerprint (PFF via MS/MS)
  • High-end bioinformatics for data interpretation.

With its automation technology Protagen can scale up from one to 1000s of spots.

B) Protein identification via LC-ESI-MS/MS

The coupling of chromatographic methods with mass spectrometry (MS), e.g. LC-ESI-MS and LC-ESI-MS/MS is specifically useful for:

  • Characterization of protein mixtures
  • Detailed structural exploration of proteins
  • Detection of post-translational modifications (PTM)
  • Amino acid sequence verification
